Glass Bookcase, Guardian Visitor Centre

Fluid Structures were engaged to work on the design of two large bookcases to be installed as the centrepiece of The Guardian newspaper’s Visitor Centre.

The bookcases are approximately 5 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. They are fabricated in a mixture of laminated and toughened glass and are bonded together using structural adhesives. The bookcases house the newspaper’s prized collection of historic papers from the Manchester Guardian era. The cases are also designed to act as balustrades at the first floor level and have been designed to withstand the appropriate crowd loading. The bookcases are a testament to the performance of structural silicone when used correctly to bond structural glass.
