The gallery will operate purely for the public benefit with the aim to promote the education of the public in the arts, benefiting both the local community as well as the wider community attracting visitors from other locations.

The existing buildings consist of a Victorian masonry building, originally a brewery, and a 1970s steel frame extension. The extension will be demolished and replaced with a steel structure, which will connect to the retained Victorian building to create gallery space. A single storey basement will be created under the footprint of the building, to be used for storage. Multiple party wall awards are required for the adjoining properties along Brick Lane and Heneage Street.
