The new Ash Court accommodation at Girton College is one of the most energy efficient halls of residence in the country. Not only has the project achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, demonstrating the breadth of it’s environmental credentials, an extremely demanding energy budget was specified and met. The performance of the building is a massive and very welcome departure from that of the original Grade II listed 100-year-old buildings.
Although the building is long and narrow with generous (triple) glazing, a very tight limit of 16.5 KWh/m2/year for heating & ventilation was met by rigorous passive design and incorporation of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. The Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) was used as a design tool prior to detailed thermal modelling being developed by the MEP consultants
