Training & Benefits

Whether you are with us as an intern or for a permanent position, we understand that career development is an important part when it comes to choosing a job.

Several of the staff have taught and lectured at universities around the UK and are well placed to mentor younger recruits. As their knowledge and understanding grows, they will be given opportunities to work on a wider range or more in-depth projects.

As a practice that is keen to champion new ideas, we also encourage employees to continue to learn and develop through regular CPD´s, in-house events and support employee’s interests in specific areas they choose to focus on exams.
Throughout your time at fluid, we adhere to an equal opportunities policy; we believe that it is in the best interest of our employees to promote people on the basis of their ability, enthusiasm and hard work.

The practice works together with graduates, actively encouraging them to sit their chartership engineering examinations in both structures and civils. The office runs a study support group to encourage and inform the staff in preparation for the chartership.

The following policies apply when members of staff are studying for their chartership exam. Fluid Structures will:

  • Pay half the exam costs and pay half the cost of a course.
  • In addition we give two days study leave prior to the exam.

Institution Membership

Fluid is committed to advancing the professional status of all employees. As a consequence, the practice pays annual membership fees for either the Institute of Structural Engineers,  the Institute of Civil Engineering or CIBSE.

Fluid School

Fluid School is a technical tutorial that runs at Fluid on a monthly basis. The tutorial is run by the management team and addresses technical and structural issues that may be of concern to engineers within the practice. Topics are wide and varied, ranging from the modelling of spring supports to the design of glass beams.

Staff are welcome to make use of the refreshment fridge stocked with an assortment of beverages after 6:00pm.

Friday Lunch

At Fluid, there is a tradition of having lunch together on Fridays.

For the last eight years, we have invited guests over for lunch and a short presentation on a subject chosen by one of the staff. The discussion is very varied and has embraced subjects ranging from Corbusier’s work in Chandigarh to the failure of resin fixings in the Boston tunnel collapse. Sometimes our guests give the talk themselves and it’s a chance to get to know more of the people in the practice and their personal interests.

Friday Lunch Guests

Previous guests have included WilkinsonEyre, Heatherwick Studios, Allies & Morrison, Robin Partington Architects, Turner Bates, Viridis Real Estate, MAKE, John Eger Architects, Knox Bhavan Architects, A Studio, Conran Associates, Devereux, Surface Architects and Chapman Taylor amongst many others.
