The project involves the design of an all glass staircase for Jumeirah in Dubai. The stair which rises up 6 meters is built of a glass podium consisting of glass side walls and shear walls. Beyond the second landing stair in hung from the floor above using 32mm diameter s/s bars. Extensive computer analysis of the stair was required to determine its fundamental frequencies and its susceptibilities to dynamic excitation, several maquettes and card models were also made to physically compare the results with the computer outputs. In addition the development of the connections between the various elements warranted special investigation, this included the joints between the glass treads and the curved 5 ply glass strings.
