We were appointed by the client to prepare a structural design package for alterations to the largest teaching hospital in Europe. The scope of the project is to create a new entrance area with an additional mezzanine floor. The entrance canopy is an elegant structure consisting of 8.0m cantilevers with a feathered edge of 100mm overall, all supported on an irregular grid of columns. Two solutions were produced, one using stressed skin principles and another using a more traditional steel grillage. These were prepared for cost comparison purposes.
Project cost: £2.0 million
