The project illustrated provides additional library space for the existing sixth form building. Modern methods of structural timber construction were utilised. The structure comprises of stepped fins that sandwich inner column elements and beams in a mortice and tennon type joint. These elements were all cut from sheets of 'Laminated Veneered Lumber' (Kerto). The elements were cut, treated and stained off site. Prior to delivery, the fins were bonded to each side of the middle ply with the mortices left open to receive 1st floor and roof beams. Assembly and erection of the Kerto took four days, fitting neatly into the schools half term holiday.
